How to Make a DIY Water Filtration System with Household Items

Here’s how to create a simple water filtration system:

Supplies:

  • Plastic bottle (cut off the bottom)

  • Coffee filter or a clean cloth

  • Gravel (small pebbles or aquarium gravel works well)

  • Sand (from play sand, or fine clean sand from outdoors)

  • Activated charcoal (you can use charcoal from a fire, but it needs to be ground into small pieces)

  • Clean container (to collect filtered water)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Bottle: Cut the plastic bottle about two-thirds up from the base. Invert it so the mouth is facing down like a funnel.

  2. Layer the Materials: Start layering in the following order:

    • Bottom layer: Place the coffee filter or cloth at the mouth of the bottle to prevent sand and charcoal from slipping through.

    • Second layer: Add a layer of activated charcoal to absorb impurities, odors, and some contaminants.

    • Third layer: Add sand (around 1–2 inches). Sand catches smaller particles.

    • Top layer: Add gravel (around 1–2 inches). Gravel helps remove larger particles.

  3. Filter the Water: Slowly pour water through the top of the filter. Collect the filtered water in your container. Repeat as needed until the water looks clearer.

  4. Boil or Treat the Water: After filtering, boil the water for at least 1 minute or use purification tablets to kill remaining bacteria and pathogens.

This simple system won’t remove chemical pollutants but is a solid first step in turning murky water into cleaner, drinkable water in a pinch.
